INTERROGATIVE ADVERBS


WHY = Por quê?

Why didn't he come to school?
He didn't come to school because he was sick.



WHEN = Quando?

When did he fly to New York?
He flew to New York last Sunday.



(AT) WHAT TIME = A que horas?

(At) what time does she get up every day?
She gets up at 7 o'clock every day.



WHERE = Onde?

Where did you put the ashtray?
(Onde você colocou o cinzeiro?)
I put it on the table.
(Eu o coloquei sobre a mesa.)



HOW = Como?
How do you go to school?
(Como você vai à escola?)
I go to school by bus.
(Eu vou à escola de ônibus.)



Observe que em todas essas perguntas o verbo se apresenta na forma interrogativa, ou seja, há inversão do verbo auxiliar.

Betty lives in Santos.
(Betty mora em Santos.)
Where does Betty live?
(Onde Betty mora?)

HOW + ADJECTIVE

How old = qual a idade, quantos anos
How old are you?
I am 35 years old.

How wide = qual a largura
How wide is the street?
The street is 7 meters wide.

How long = qual o comprimento / quanto tempo
How long is this room?
It is 10 meters long.

How long have you been studying English?
I've been studying English since I was very young.

How tall = qual a altura (pessoas)
How tall is your brother?
He is 6 feet tall.

How high = qual a altura (coisas)
How high is this wall?
It is 2 meters high.

Note que essas expressões (medida, idade) são formuladas com o verbo TO BE e o adjetivo da pergunta é repetido na resposta.
Ex.:
How old is your wife?
She is 30 years old.



HOW + MUCH ou MANY

How much = quanto(a) - singular
How much money do you have?

How many = quantos(as) - plural
How many dollars do you have?



HOW + ADVERB

How often = com que frequência, quão frequentemente
How often do you visit your grandfather?
I visit him twice a week.

How quickly = com que rapidez, quão rápido
How quickly can you walk to school?
I can do it in half an hour.
