IF CLAUSE (2nd part)

.
IF CLAUSE (cont.)

C) PAST-UNREAL CONDITION

Sugere condições hipotéticas ou irreais no passado

If Peter had studied (in the past), he would have passed.
(Se Peter tivesse estudado - MAS NÃO ESTUDOU -, teria passado.)

FORMAÇÃO:

IF CLAUSE (Past Perfect) + MAIN CLAUSE (Conditional Perfect)

If I had seen you, I would have talked to you.
had seen = past perfect
would have talked = conditional perfect

ATTENTION!!!
Em "PAST-UNREAL CONDITION" também podemos usar os verbos anômalos (CAN, MAY etc.). Assim, temos:

FUTURE-POSSIBLE CONDITION
If you study, you will learn.
If you study, you can learn.

PRESENT-UNREAL CONDITION
If you studied, you would learn.
If you studied, you could learn.
(Se você estudou aprenderia / Se você estudou poderia aprender.)

PAST-UNREAL CONDITION
If you had studied, you would have learned.
If you had studied, you could have learned.

IF CLAUSE (SPECIAL CASES)

A) SIMPLE PRESENT NA "IF CLAUSE" E NA "MAIN CLAUSE"

IF CLAUSE (Simple Present) + MAIN CLAUSE (Simple Present)

If you are right, I am wrong.
are = simple present
am = simple present
(Se você está certo, eu estou errado.)

Snow melts if the sun heats it.
melts = simple present
heats = simple present
(A neve derrete se o sol a aquece.)

A finalidade dessa construção é expressar situações de CAUSA e EFEITO.

B) USO DE "WILL" OU "WOULD" NA "IF CLAUSE"

If you will sign agreement, we will be grateful.
(Se você assinar esse acordo, ficaremos gratos.)

If you would wait for me, I would be very pleased.

If you would kindly open the door, we would feel better.

A diferença entre WILL e WOULD, nesse tipo de construção, é que WOULD transmite mais cortesia.

C) INVERSÃO DO VERBO AUXILIAR - OMISSÃO DA CONJUNÇÃO "IF"

Se a "IF CLAUSE" contiver um verbo auxiliar (HAD, WERE), pode-se omitir a conjunção IF, invertendo a posição do verbo auxiliar com a do sujeito.

If Tom had been rescued, he wouldn't have died.
Had Tom been rescued, he wouldn't have died.

If I were rich, I would go abroad.
Were I rich, I would go abroad.
(Se eu fosse rico iria ao exterior.)
